This beautiful matryoshka comes from a collection from the 70s / 80s. The dolls were given away to Germany from the former USSR during the GDR era. The higher quality a set of matryoshkas, the less the big dolls differ from the small ones.

Since the 17th century, in the area around the northwestern village of Khokhloma, the well-known handicraft of Khochloma painting (Khochlomskaja rospis) with golden and red plant and animal motifs on a black background on wooden utensils such as spoons, bowls or jugs was widespread . In 1918, after the October Revolution, the production of these products was centralized in Semyonov at the instigation of the Soviet authorities. In 1925 the production was placed under an Artel and more and more mass production, which culminated in the opening of a factory in 1960.
