I thought for a long time what the concept for such a blog should look like. After all, the thing should also make sense, have added value and information content and remain interesting.
At regular intervals, people are introduced here who break new ground, put their ideas into practice, people who have and had the courage to change.
Rejoice, you will get to know a lot of great ways of thinking.
What does all of this have to do with vintage?
Our Vintage-Kontor follows the idea of more sustainability and ethics.
We keep things, reinterpret them and often lead them to a completely different purpose. Many an old treasure with a lot of patina is experiencing a renaissance as a photo prop, as a decoration in the house bar. Many a steel box eke out its first life in industry and now has a job as a wooden box by the fireplace. Every part that we send into the world does not have to be produced anew. This is good for the climate, and of course it helps our buyers to express their creativity and to live really consciously.
Sustainability and tradition will have a place in all blog posts. Good and new arise only from the tried and tested, from experience and the careful handling of the past and the future.
What I would like to introduce to you today
Today I would like to introduce you to a project that my longtime companion Ute Schoormann born out of a very spontaneous and emotional idea. Her love for Mallorca, good wine and hospitality inspired her to this project:
Before Corona, Ute's life was that of a successful personnel service provider for the catering and hotel industry. Like so many in the event industry, your company, K3-Services GmbH, in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Hamburg, was pulled the economic plug by the COVID19 pandemic.
By chance she became aware of the situation of winemakers on Mallorca through her friend, a German / Mallorcan wine merchant, Eva Strunz. How was that? In March 2020, the corona lock-down also brought life on the island to a complete standstill. Spain announced the toughest exit regulations in Europe. Buying groceries, going to the pharmacy, that was only possible if it was absolutely important. Everything else was completely forbidden and subjected to heavy penalties. There was no more everyday life, no local sales of wines in the markets, no tourists, who are so vital for the smaller winemakers on Mallorca.
At the time when Eva Strunz talked about the situation in Mallorca, the 2019 vintage was still largely unsold in barrels and tanks. The work in the vineyards for the 2020 vintage was not affordable and the vineyards threatened to be left to their own devices. No sales of the last vintages and no future income from the current year. A more than critical situation.
Ute started the first campaign spontaneously for the Bodega de la Rubia and its winemakers, from the home office, so to speak. Without further ado, she had pallets with wine transported to Cologne and Hamburg, converted her office into a wine store with new shelves, and started selling Mallorcan organic wines - first through personal delivery to friends and acquaintances, now via a web shop - with success!
So the Mallorcan vineyards could be cultivated again, and life went on. The help came at the very last minute and offered a real chance of survival for the winemakers.
Europe is small, and when people move together and help each other through no fault of their own, then something can really be done. The initiative is constantly evolving, and more winegrowers and micro-entrepreneurs (ceramics, honey, salt, vinegar and oil) are added. Where wonderful wine grows, where winemakers live convincingly in their tradition and have a responsible understanding of new wine. Above all, it is about the small winemakers who do not receive any subsidies and who do not live from the big distributors, the winemakers who have always managed to feed their families with their small, traditional wineries. Winemakers who know almost every grape by name, where every move has been made for generations, where the love of the product is in the foreground, and every family member lends a hand as they can.
So helping can be very tasty and embellish the anticipation of the next vacation on the "German" favorite island.
